DENTON – The North Texas men’s basketball team has had a full week to prepare for a Conference USA rematch against Rice on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. inside the Super Pit.

The Mean Green (6-15, 0-9 C-USA) fell just short against Old Dominion last Saturday 73-67. North Texas had a one-point lead but didn’t make a field goal in the final 2:40 of the game. Senior guard J-Mychal Reese led the team with 17 points and was 5-of-7 from the free throw line. Junior forward Shane Temara scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Sophomore center Rickey Brice Jr. added 13 points off the bench, including 7-for-10 from the free throw line.

North Texas has had a bunch of close games losing by single digits in five of the last 10 games. The Mean Green were struggling from the free throw line but went 21-for-28 (75 percent) against the Monarchs. It was the first time in seven games North Texas has shot 70 percent or better from the free throw line.

Freshman guard A.J. Lawson is second on the team in scoring at 10.1 points per game but has scored a team-best 213 points. Reese sits third in scoring at 9.9 points per game and leads the team in assists at 3.5 per game (71 total). Classmate Deckie Johnson has played 16 games and is fourth in scoring at 8.5 points per game. Johnson is second in the conference in free throw percentage going 42-of-49 (85.7 percent) and sits 57th nationally.
