Johnny Jones Wins 100th Victory At North Texas Against FIU

DENTON (2/2/08) The Mean Green men’s basketball team only scored 60 points but it was enough to defeat FIU by a score of 60-57 and give head coach Johnny Jones his 100th win at North Texas on Saturday night at the Super Pit.


The Mean Green wins its second straight game and improves to 14-7 and 5-5 in the Sun Belt, while FIU falls to 6-15 and 3-8 in the conference.


North Texas won its first game scoring 69 points or less. The 60 points is tied for the second fewest points scored this season. The Mean Green made 16 field goals in the game, the lowest total this season.


Josh White scored 16 points, going 7-for-9 from the free-throw line. With North Texas down, 53-52, with 5:03 left in the game, White made four of five free throws to put the Mean Green ahead for good, 56-53, at 3:11.


Keith Wooden scored only six points in the game, but he made them when North Texas needed him to. The senior made a layup to keep the Mean Green ahead, 58-55, with 58 seconds left in the game. Tristan Thompson hit two free throws with 11 seconds remaining to put the Mean Green ahead by three, 60-57, and FIU missed a three-pointer at the buzzer that would have tied the game.


White hit two three-pointers back-to-back in the final two minutes of the first half, giving North Texas its largest lead of the game, 32-20. The Mean Green entered half ahead by 10. North Texas was 6-for-10 from three-point range in the first half, while FIU did not attempt a shot from behind the arc.


Russell Hicks led FIU on a 21-11 run to start off the second half. Hicks scored 12 points in the run which tied the game at 43-43. Hicks scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half. Neither team led by more then three points following the 43-43 tie at the 11:13 mark in the second half.


Thompson joined White in double figures with 11 points. He went 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. Thirteen of NT’s 28 points in the second half were from the charity stripe.


North Texas returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 7 when it faces Western Kentucky at 7 pm.
