DENTON – The North Texas men’s basketball team continues its home stand on Saturday, Jan. 27, against FIU at 5 p.m. at the Super Pit.

The Mean Green (11-10, 4-4 C-USA) picked up a huge C-USA home win 59-53 against FAU on Jan. 25. North Texas is tied for sixth in the Conference standings with Southern Miss at 4-4 and is just one game behind UAB (5-3) for fifth place. The top four seeds get a bye in the first round of the C-USA tournament held in Frisco at The Star Facility.

Sophomore A.J. Lawson came up huge for the Mean Green with a game-high 18 points after Roosevelt Smart was held to a season-low four points. Smart only played 21 minutes after being in foul trouble most of the game. Smart went 4-for-4 from the free throw line extending his streak to 15 made free throws in a row.

Sophomore Ryan Woolridge scored 10 of his 12 points against FAU in the first half. Woolridge finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. He leads the team with 123 assists, ranked 20th in the nation and 26th in minutes per game at 36.4. During Conference play, Woolridge leads the league in assists with 59 in eight games.

Freshman forward Zachary Simmons added 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds against FAU. North Texas is 4-2 this season when Simmons scores in double-figures.

About the Opponent: FIU
• This will be the 21st meeting between the two teams with North Texas holding a 15-5 record and is 7-2 at the Super Pit. The Mean Green have won four out of the last five in the series.

• Last season, FIU defeated North Texas, 90-71, on Feb. 11, 2017, at FIU arena. Ryan Woolridge tied his career-high with 21 points, 17 in the second half and was 8-for-9 from the field. A.J. Lawson added 13 points and J-Mychal Reese scored 12. FIU’s Elmo Stephen scored a career-high 34 points with 12 rebounds.

• In the last meeting in Denton, North Texas rallied from a 12-point deficit to win 77-75 on the back of Deckie Johnson’s 32-point performance, including five three-pointers in the second half. Johnson tied the then-school record with eight. Jeremy Combs added a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds.

• FIU enters with a 9-12 overall record and is 3-5 in Conference USA play after dropping three of their last four games. The Panthers lost on the road at Rice on Jan. 25, 73-64.

• Brian Beard, Jr. is leading the team in scoring at 15.7 points per game and is leading the C-USA in steals with 61. Trejon Jacob is second in scoring at 15.5 points per game and has hit a team-best 52 three-pointers. Beard, Jr. and Jacob combined for 44 points at Rice in the loss.

• FIU leads the C-USA in steals with 162 (7.7 per game) as a team. The Panthers have struggled from the free throw line shooting 58 percent, ranked last in the C-USA.
