Men’s Basketball Faces Tough Road Test At Streaking UAB

DENTON -- The North Texas men’s basketball team is looking to snap a three-game losing streak but will face one of the hottest teams in the country at UAB on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. inside Bartow Arena.

The Blazers are 16-3 on the season with a perfect 6-0 conference record. The Mean Green are 7-12 and 2-4 in league play. North Texas is looking to continue its solid play against UAB having won the last two meetings in the Conference USA.

NT is coming off an 86-64 road loss at Middle Tennessee Thursday night. Junior J-Mychal Reese led all scorers with 20 points and four assists in 37 minutes against the Blue Raiders. Sophomore Jeremy Combs earned his fifth straight double-double tying former Mean Green student-athlete Tony Mitchell. Combs scored 13 points and pulled down 12 rebounds securing his eighth double-double of the season. Junior Deckie Johnson added 10 points scoring double figures for the 14th time this season.

Combs leads the team at 14.9 points per game and has grabbed 10.5 rebounds per game. He is second in the conference in rebounding per game and first in total rebounds. Combs has pulled down 200 total rebounds which is eight in the nation.

Reese is second on the team in scoring just one point behind Combs at 14.8 points per game. Reese leads the team with 78 assists and has hit 25 made three pointers. Johnson is third in scoring at 14.3 points per game and has hit a team best 40 threes from downtown.

As a team, the Mean Green sits at 42nd in the country in field goal percentage at 47.1 and is eighth in free throw attempts (529). North Texas is 68th in free throws made with 314 in 19 games.

North Texas will have a week to prepare for a road game at Rice Saturday, Jan. 30 in Houston.

About the Opponent: UAB

• This will be the fourth meeting between the two teams with the first meeting back on Dec. 4, 1997.

• In the last meeting, the Mean Green came away with a 67-64 victory at the Super Pit last season. Jordan Williams had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Colin Voss added 14 points and Jeremy Combs finished with nine points. North Texas has won the last two meetings at the Super Pit.

• UAB enters with a 16-3 overall record and is a perfect 6-0 in the C-USA coming off a 82-70 home win against Rice. The Blazers own the nation’s second longest winning streak at 13 games and have won 20 straight at home.

• UAB is led by last season’s C-USA sixth man of the year Chris Cokley who is averaging 14.0 points per game. Robert Brown is second on the team at 12.9 points per game and has hit 38 made three pointers. William Lee is third at 9.9 points per game and is second in rebounding at 6.2 boards per game.

North Texas struggled from the field through much of Thursday night's game against league-leader UAB, but the Mean Green out-battled the taller Blazers on the boards to create 23 second-chance points and got a pair of clutch plays in the final minute for a 67-64 win.
