DENTON (1/20/07) Senior Calvin Watson scored 20 points to lead the North Texas men’s basketball team to a 76-59 victory on Saturday night at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green (13-6, 4-4 Sun Belt) is 8-1 at home and leads the series against Florida Atlantic, 1-0.
"I thought our guys played well tonight against a very solid basketball team in Florida Atlantic," said head coach Johnny Jones. "We played well defensively. In the first half, we only shot 29 percent from the field but we were only down four at intermission. This was key for us because we were able to bounce back in the second half."
After a slow start in the first half, the Mean Green’s shots began to fall at a more frequent pace in the second period. North Texas shot 60.7 percent in the second half, compared to its 29 percent from the field in the first.
Watson led four players in double figures and recorded a career high with six three-pointers. The Mean Green hit 10 three-pointers in the game, going 10-for-22 for a .455 percentage.
North Texas scored 24 points in the first half, its second lowest total of the season. The Mean Green was held to 23 points in the first half against Nebraska on Nov. 29.
Kendrick Davis gave the Mean Green its first lead, 29-28, since the opening minutes of the first half, with two free throws at the start of the second period. After scoring only two points in the first half, Watson hit three three-pointers in the first four minutes of the second stanza. His third three-pointer put the Mean Green ahead by five, 35-30 with 16:28 left in the game.
Michael Sturns put the Mean Green ahead by 10, 50-42, with two free throws. The junior came off the bench to score 13 points. North Texas increased its lead as the game wore on, leading in double digits for the last five minutes.
The Mean Green held the edge in rebounding, 35-28. Quincy Williams led the team with nine boards. He also chipped in 12 points. Davis also posted 12 points in the game.
The Mean Green forced 20 FAU turnovers, scoring 21 points off them.
North Texas returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 25 when it hosts Middle Tennessee at 7pm in the Super Pit.
