MIAMI (1/18/07) Alex Galindo hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to lift Florida International to a 67-66 win over North Texas at the Pharmed Arena. The Mean Green had one final chance to win the game with 1.2 seconds left but the Golden Panthers stole the inbounds pass to seal the victory.
“We had a chance at the end but we just didn’t get a good look," said head coach Johnny Jones. "Give FIU credit because they played hard and good enough to win the game”.
In a wild final minute of play, North Texas led by two points at 66-64 thanks to a Keith Wooden basket. Galindo’s basket was his sixth 3-pointer of the night as he finished with a game-high 24 points.
North Texas raced out to an early 21-10 lead with 12:50 remaining in the first half as Calvin Watson knocked down two 3-pointers. The Mean Green held a seven-point at 37-29 with two minutes in the first half when the Golden Panthers hit three 3-pointers and closed the half on a 9-0 run to take a 38-37 lead at the break.
FIU opened an eight-point lead at 49-41 two minutes into the second half when the Mean Green answered. The Mean Green went on a 10-3 run to slice the Golden Panther lead to just one-point at 52-51 with 12 minutes left.
The two teams went back and forth as the lead changed times six times in the final ten minutes of play.
Four players scored in double figures for North Texas led by Watson who finished with 18 points.
North Texas is back in action on Saturday night at the Super Pit as they host Florida Atlantic at 7 p.m.
