DENTON -- The North Texas men’s basketball team rides a four-game home winning streak entering a critical conference matchup against Marshall Thursday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. inside the Super Pit.

The Mean Green have won five of their last seven games, improving to 7-9 overall with a 2-1 record in three Conference USA games.

North Texas has been playing with a fierce aggressive style of play that has seen more highlight dunks, fast-breaks and all-around exciting action. Comparing the play from last season the numbers show this team wants to play fast.

In 2014-15, North Texas had 33 dunks in 16 games and then-freshman Jeremy Combs had just three dunks total. Last year’s team had 48 (3.0 per game) fast-break points and averaged just 17.6 points in the paint through the first 16 games.

Fast forward to the 2015-16 season, and the Mean Green have scored 154 fast-break points (9.6 per game) and have thrown down 43 dunks through 16 games. North Texas has also nearly doubled its production in points in the paint, to 31.6 points per game.

Sophomore Jeremy Combs has been a large part of the exciting play with 25 dunks, and he ranks third in scoring at 13.8 points per game. Newcomers Deckie Johnson (14.4 points per game) and J-Mychal Reese (14.1 points per game, 4.1 assists) have also contributed to the high-flying action. The big three has started all 16 games this season and have provided a lot of entertainment for fans at the Super Pit.

With all the attention placed on getting to the rim, it has also led to increased attempts at the free-throw line. The Mean Green enter Thursday’s game against Marshall ranked 10th in the nation in attempts (450) and 68th in free throws made (272).

In what should be an exciting game in the battle of green vs. green, North Texas is hoping to sustain and build on that momentum with their high-flying play at the rim.
