Men's Basketball Stays Undefeated At The Super Pit

DENTON (1/12/07) Quincy Williams scored a season-high 18 points to lead the North Texas men’s basketball team to a 72-65 victory against Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday night at the Super Pit.


The Mean Green improved to 9-0 at home and 12-4 overall. North Texas moves to 3-2 in the Sun Belt Conference and hands ULL (7-9, 4-2) its fourth straight loss to the Mean Green.


North Texas scored eight unanswered points after being down by one, 65-64, to take the victory. The Mean Green led by as many as 10 points in the second half before letting the lead dwindle in the final five minutes.


Williams was 7-for-8 from the field and 4-for-6 from the free throw line. He also pulled down seven rebounds. The senior scored five of NT’s first eight points at the start of the game and the Mean Green’s first eight points of the second period.


In a tightly-contested first half which contained six lead changes and six ties, neither team led by more then four points. The Ragin’ Cajuns held a four-point lead, 29-25, with 1:49 left in the first half before Williams hit a layup and Adam McCoy made a three-pointer to tie the game at 30.


North Texas tied the game again at 35 when Ben Bell hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.


A free throw by Kendrick Hogans gave North Texas a 10-point lead, 56-46, with 9:32 left in the game. The Ragin’ Cajuns responded with a 19-8 run to take a 65-64 lead. Randell Daigle capped the run with a three-pointer. He fouled out with 17 points and 3:14 left in the game.


Collin Dennis hit two free throws to put the lead back in North Texas’ hands for good. He joined Williams in double figures with 17 points. He was 8-for-9 from the free-throw line. The Mean Green scored 22 points from the charity stripe, including the last four points of the game.


North Texas shot 51.1 percent from the field and held the edge in rebounds, 35-27.


The Mean Green returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 17 when it faces New Orleans at 7 pm in the Super Pit.
