DENTON, Texas – The Sun Belt Conference’s top two players – North Texas’ Tony Mitchell and Augustine Rubit of South Alabama – will clash in a key league matchup on Saturday night at the Super Pit. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. and can be heard on the Mean Green Radio Network.
Rubit will once again be a strong candidate for Sun Belt Player of the Year honors. The junior leads the conference in rebounding at 11.2 per game, and is second in scoring with an average of 19.3. Rubit owns nine double-doubles this year, including a pair of 30-point games.
As Mean Green fans are aware, Mitchell earned Preseason All-America and Sun Belt Preseason Plauyer of the Year awards. Despite constant double and triple teams, Mitchell ranks seventh in the league in scoring (14.6), fourth in rebounding (8.9) and second in blocks (2.5).
Mitchell exploded for a career-high 34 points and 16 rebounds in willing NT to a 78-73 overtime win over South Alabama on Jan. 5, 2012. Mitchell had seven of his points, including two dunks, and three rebounds in the extra frame. NT held the Jaguars to 3-of-12 shooting in overtime. Freddie Goldstein led USA with 21 points, while Rubit played just 11 minutes after sustaining an injury early in the contest.
In Denton, North Texas and South Alabama have each won five games against the other, but the Mean Green has pulled out a win in the last three. The last USA win in Denton came on Jan. 28, 2006 (89-67), when Demetric Bennett scored 21 points while helping the Jags shoot 58.5 percent.
