Dennis Pours In 30 As Mean Green Win At Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. (1/1008) The showdown between the two teams that battled it out for the SBC championship last season turned into a Mean Green victory 74-63 from the Convocation Center. Junior Collin Dennis blistered Arkansas State for a career-high 30 points, the most by a North Texas player since 2003, and the Mean Green won its second straight games.

 

I thought our kids came out and played excellent defense tonight in a very hostile environment,” said North Texas coach Johnny Jones. “They (Arkansas State) are a very tough team at home and I was proud of the way we came in with a lot of effort and intensity’

 

North Texas (11-4, 2-2) led wire-to-wire in the game as they never trailed Arkansas State. Dennis scored the first five points of the game and didn’t stop until he matched Chris Davis’ 30 point effort for the most points in a single game since February 8, 2003.

 

The game starting a defensive stalemate but a quick 13-2 run by North Texas with six minutes left in the first half to take a 32-17 lead with 4 minutes in the first half.

 

Arkansas State (7-8, 2-3) closed the half with a 7-0 run to make it a 32-24 at the break. The second half started like the first with a Mean Green run of 18-8 to extend its lead to 18 points at 50-32 with 13 minutes to play. Arkansas State made numerous runs in the second half but got not get any closer than eight points.

 

The Mean Green pounded the Indians on the boards with 17 offensive rebounds and a rebounding edge of 41-29. Freshman Josh White tally double figures with 12 points along with Ben Bell who had 10.

 

North Texas returns home on Saturday night when they host Louisiana-Lafayette from the Super Pit at 7 p.m.
