Men's Basketball Wins First Conference Game Of Season

DENTON (1/7/08) Josh White scored 20 and Dez Willingham posted a career-high 19 points to lead the North Texas men’s basketball team to its first conference win of the season with a 78-57 victory against Louisiana at Monroe on Monday night at the Super Pit.

 

The Mean Green improved to 10-4 overall and 1-2 in the Sun Belt Conference. NT is now 8-0 at home. The Warhawks fell to 6-9 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

 

White and Willingham led five players in double figures. White posted his 11th game in double figures. Willingham was 7-for-10 from the field and 4-for-6 from three-point range. Ben Bell posted 15 points, while Collin Dennis added 11. Dennis has scored in double figures in five of the last six games. Quincy Williams notched his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

 

North Texas continued its hot hand from three-point range, scoring 11 from behind the arc. Six of those were scored in the first half when the Mean Green jumped out to a 20-point lead. NT was able to maintain its lead through the second half.

 

White led North Texas on a hot start, scoring eight of the Mean Green’s first 12 unanswered points, including two three-pointers. Adam McCoy added a three-pointer of his own to put North Texas ahead, 15-1, five minutes into the contest.

 

Bell scored five unanswered points to put North Texas ahead by 14, 29-15. Bell hit the team’s fourth three-pointer and then off a Collin Dennis steal and a Quincy Williams assist, the senior guard laid in a basket on the fastbreak.

 

The fastbreaks continued with the Mean Green scoring six of the next eight points, 35-17. Willingham hit back-to-back baskets, including a three, to put the home team ahead by 20 points, 43-23. White ended the half with a floater at the buzzer, 45-23.

 

Despite edging the Mean Green in points in the second half, 34-33, ULM was never able to cut into the NT lead. North Texas led by as many as 27 in the second period.

 

The Mean Green shot 51.9 percent from the field, its fourth-highest percentage this season. NT shot 55 percent from three-point range, its second-best percentage of the year.

 

North Texas held ULM to eight field goals in the first half. Tony Hooper scored 14 of the Warhawks 23 first-half points.

 

The Mean Green returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 7 when it travels to Arkansas to face Arkansas State at 7 pm.
