Men’s Basketball Rides Two-Game Winning Streak Into UTEP Matchup

DENTON -- The North Texas men’s basketball team has won four of its last five games entering a key road game at UTEP Sunday, Jan. 3 at 4 p.m. central time on the American Sports Network.

The Mean Green sit at 6-8 on the season and are 1-0 in Conference USA after a comeback win 70-66 at UTSA. North Texas was down by 15 points at halftime and rallied back to outscore UTSA, 45-to-26, in the second half. NT continues to shoot well from the three point line going 9-of-18 to fuel the comeback.

Four North Texas players finished the game in double figures with freshman Ja’Michael Brown leading the way with a career-high 21 points, including 18 in the second half. Junior Deckie Johnson added 18 points, classmate J-Mychal Reese had 15 points and sophomore Jeremy Combs chipped in with 12 points. Freshman Rickey Brice Jr. sparked the team off the bench with 11 rebounds, four points and a block in 21 minutes.

Johnson continues his recent strong play and leads the team in scoring at 14.6 points per game and has hit a team-high 32 three pointers. Reese is second on the team at 14.4 points per game and has a team best 54 assists. Reese has scored in double figures in 12 of 14 games.

Sophomore Jeremy Combs is third on the team in scoring at 12.8 points per game and leads the team in rebounding at 9.1 boards per game. Combs leads the conference with 127 total rebounds and sits 26th nationally.

As a team, North Texas is third in scoring offense at 77.4 points per game and 110th in the nation. The Mean Green are shooting 48.2 percent from the field, which is second in C-USA and 33rd nationally. Finally, North Texas leads the conference in free throw attempts at 390 and is third in the nation in that category.

North Texas heads home for a three-game home stand starting with Rice on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 1 p.m. broadcasted on the American Sports Network.

About the Opponent: UTEP

• This will be the 10th meeting between the two teams with the first ever meeting coming on Dec. 29, 1951. UTEP won both games against North Texas last season by 14 points and 23 points.

• In the last meeting, the Miners defeated North Texas, 83-60, on March 5, 2015 in El Paso. Combs scored 11 points and grabbed three rebounds. UTEP scored 21 points off turnovers and 32 points in the paint.

• UTEP is 9-5 overall and 1-0 in C-USA after a close 61-60 win against Rice on a game-winning basket from Dominic Artis. The Miners have won three in a row and are 7-3 at home.

• Sophomore Omega Harris is putting up 15.2 points per game in five games. Junior Lee Moore is at 14.0 points per game in 14 games, 12 starts. Junior transfer Dominic Artis leads the team in assists with 71 to just 30 turnovers. Freshman Terry Winn leads the team in rebounding at 5.9 per game.
