Mean Green Hurt By Hot Shooting At Charlotte On New Year’s Eve
North Texas Gives Up 14 Three-Pointers In Road Loss
CHARLOTTE, NC – North Texas fell behind early and trailed by 22 points at the half leading to a tough 101-76 road loss at Charlotte Saturday afternoon at Halton Arena.
The Mean Green fall to 6-7 on the season and are 0-1 after a 25-point loss to open Conference USA play. Charlotte improves to 7-5, 1-0 in C-USA action after shooting 14-for-20 (70.0) from the three-point line.
“I thought we came out and had a much better second half," head coach Tony Benford said. “Charlotte jumped all over us in the first half and we needed to get out on their shooters. I was proud of the way J-Mychal Reese and Ryan Woolridge competed till the end. We need to regroup and come home with a split against Old Dominion Monday.”
Senior guard J-Mychal Reese scored 16 points, including 12 in the second half to lead North Texas. Freshman guard Ryan Woolridge added 15 points (career-high) off the bench and tied his season-high with eight rebounds.
North Texas opened the first half with a 4-0 lead after a layup from Reese and a dunk from sophomore center Rickey Brice Jr.
Charlotte would open up a 10-point lead after a 22-8 run hitting a bunch of three-pointers. With 6:25 left in the half, the Mean Green got within 11 points at 34-23 off a jumper by A.J. Lawson.
The 49ers would continue to push the pace and ballooned their lead to 22-points off a last second jumper by Jon Davis to end the half.
Freshman guard Ryan Woolridge had a solid half with six points and five rebounds to lead North Texas. Junior Shane Temara added six points off the bench and was 3-for-5 from the field.
In the second half, North Texas came out attacking by getting to the free throw line. Woolridge went racing down the court for a layup and Reese hit two free throws to cut Charlotte’s lead to 59-39.
With 15:39 remaining, Reese hit a jumper to get North Texas within 18 points at 61-43. The 49ers pushed the lead back to 20-plus points after an 11-4 run capped by a layup from Jon Davis.
The Mean Green made one last run at the nine minute mark after a layup from junior Jeremy Combs cut the lead to 17 points at 74-57. Charlotte quieted the run by scoring seven-straight points to essentially put the game away.
North Texas couldn’t get within 20 points in the last eight minutes as Charlotte cruised to a 101-76 victory.
North Texas will travel to Old Dominion for its second conference game of the season on Monday, Jan. 2 at 4 p.m. (CT).
