ARLINGTON -- The North Texas men's basketball team couldn't overcome missed free throws and getting out-rebounded by 18 as they dropped a road game at UT Arlington, 90-67, Thursday night at the College Park Center.

Junior J-Mychal Reese and classmate Deckie Johnson lead the team with 16 points apiece. Johnson set a new career-high with 16 points off 6-of-13 from the field. Reese added three assists and four rebounds in 31 minutes.

"I am very disappointed with the way we played tonight," head coach Tony Benford said. "After being down we got ourselves back in the game but ended up being down 10 at the half. I give a lot of credit to UT Arlington as they just outplayed us tonight. We missed 18 free throws tonight and were out-rebounded by 18 so you're not going to beat anyone playing like that. We have to regroup and try to get this win Saturday at home."

North Texas (2-5) finished the game shooting 44.8 percent from the field off 26-of-58. The Mean Green had their worst game this season from the free throw line making just 9-for-27 for 33.3 percent. The Mavs finished with 90 points and shot 53.3 percent on 32-of-60 from the floor.

The Mean Green got behind early thanks to UT Arlington's work on the offensive glass. Just eight minutes into the game the Mavs held a 23-6 lead and the crowd of 6,000 grew louder with every made basket.

North Texas battled back thanks to a huge 24-7 run to tie the game at 30 apiece with 5:15 left in the half off a three-pointer by Ja'Michael Brown. Junior Carrington Ward came off the bench and sparked North Texas with eight first half points. Ward would hit a three-pointer with 2:40 left in the half to cut UT Arlington's lead to 41-40. The Mavs closed the half on a 11-2 run ending with a dagger three-pointer from Drew Charles.

In the early moments of the second half, the Mean Green cut the lead to five points off a layup from sophomore Jeremy Combs to make the score 54-49. UTA would answer with a 15-6 run capped by a three-pointer by Kennedy Eubanks to put the game out of reach at 69-55. The Mavs would cruise to a 23 point win not letting North Texas get closer the entire second half.

UTA was led by Kevin Hervey who finished with 20 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists in 31 minutes. Kaelon Wilson added 13 points off the bench. UT Arlington scored 40 points in the paint and received 34 points off the bench. One of the nation's top offensive rebounding teams proved it again getting 14 offensive rebounds and 16 second chance points.

Sophomore Jeremy Combs finished with nine points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks in the loss.
