Mean Green Offense Struggles In Road Loss At Texas Tech
Senior Deckie Johnson Scored 13 Points
LUBBOCK, TX - The North Texas men's basketball team started slow and couldn't recover in a 70-43 road loss at Texas Tech Tuesday night.
The Mean Green (1-1) finished the game 17-of-55 from the field and were only 4-for-24 from the three-point line. Turnovers plagued North Texas after 15 miscues led to 24 points for Texas Tech.
Junior Zach Smith led the Red Raiders with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Aaron Ross added 13 points.
"I have to give credit to Texas Tech tonight," head coach Tony Benford said. "I think they're an NCAA Tournament team. With their depth, they can wear you down. They turned us over a lot early.
North Texas was outscored 36-to-16 in points in the paint and gave up 46 rebounds (10 offensive) in the loss.
"We couldn't score," Benford said. At the end of the day, you got to score some points. We didn't score enough of them early on."
Senior Deckie Johnson led the team in scoring for the second straight game with 13 points off 4-of-11 shooting. Freshman A.J. Lawson added 10 points off 5-of-13 from the field. Junior Jeremy Combs chipped in with nine points and four rebounds.
In the first half, Texas Tech opened the game on a 12-2 run off a jumper by Anthony Livingston. Sophomore Ja'Michael Brown cut the lead to 12-5 off a long three-pointer with 13:52 remaining in the half.
Lawson gave the Mean Green a boast with back-to-back buckets to make the score 16-9 at the 9:06 mark.
The Red Raiders responded with an 8-0 run capped off by a fast break dunk from Justin Gray. Texas Tech held a 26-11 lead but North Texas would not go away.
Johnson hit a jumper at the 3:35 mark to get the Mean Green within 10 at 28-18. Brown would make a driving layup with just under a minute left in the half, but Texas Tech scored the last three points to make it 37-24 at intermission.
The Red Raiders opened the second half on a 5-0 run leading to their biggest lead at 42-24. Johnson stopped the damaged with a three-pointer at the 13:57 mark.
With 9:00 minutes left, Texas Tech led by 22 points after two free throws from Keenan Evans. North Texas cut the lead to 58-42 off a layup from Johnson with 6:03 left.
The Red Raiders wouldn't let the Mean Green get any closer closing the game on a 12-1 run to make the final score 70-43.

North Texas heads back to Denton to host Drexel on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. inside the Super Pit.
