High Scoring Offense Leads Mean Green Past Eureka
North Texas Scores Third-Most Points In School History
ON - The Grant McCasland era opened with a scoring barrage as North Texas men's basketball scored 122 points, third-most in school history, to defeat Eureka College Friday night at the Super Pit.
Six Mean Green players finished in double-figures with sophomore newcomer Roosevelt Smart leading the way with 23 points off 8-for-10 shooting. Sophomore Ryan Woolridge ran the offense and finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists and five steals.
Senior Shane Temara gave North Texas a boost with 15 points and six rebounds and freshman Umoja Gibson had 19 points in his first-ever collegiate game. Junior Jorden Duffy added 11 points and junior Allante Holston had 11 points off the bench.
North Texas never trailed in a wire-to-wire victory and a last second three-pointer from Holston pushed the lead to 57 points making the final 122-65. The Mean Green scored 32 points off turnovers and led 26-to-6 in fast break points. The new-look defense forced 25 turnovers from Eureka and had 13 steals.
UNT opened the game with a 12-3 run capped by a dunk from Temara with 17:25 remaining in the first half. The Red Devils answered with a 12-3 run of their own to tie the game at 15-15 off a three-point from Shea Feehan.
North Texas started to build a lead after a 20-4 burst on a three-pointer from Duffy at the 7:33 mark. The Mean Green's lead ballooned to 25 points after a three-pointer from Gibson to make the score 50-25 with 4:08 left in the half.
Freshman Zachary Simmons finished the first half with a tip-in to give North Texas a 55-34 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Temara scored a quick seven points to push the lead to 26 points at 62-36 with 18:57 left. Six minutes later, Gibson caught fire with back-to-back three-pointers to give the Mean Green a 38 point advantage at 85-47.
At the 7:51 mark, North Texas went over the century mark after a jumper from Smart to make the score 101-52. The Mean Green defense would come away with 10 straight stops at one-point in the second half.
With the shot clock winding down, Holston nailed a deep three-pointer to make the final score 122-65.
North Texas will travel to Lincoln, NE to face BIG 10 foe Nebraska on Monday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m.
