Louisiana Tech Overtakes Mean Green In Second Half
Bulldogs Defeat North Texas, 85-67
DENTON -- The North Texas men's basketball team held an early lead, but Louisiana Tech overtook the Mean Green in the second half and cruised to an 85-67 win on Thursday night at the Super Pit.
North Texas led by as many as seven points in the first half before LA Tech changed from man-to-man defense to zone and the Mean Green could not get back into a rhythm.
"We didn't do a great job against their zone," North Texas men's basketball coach Tony Benford said. "We had too many turnovers. They just broke us down in the second half."
The Bulldogs used a 10-0 run early in the second half to pull away from the Mean Green after the two teams entered halftime tied at 32. The visitors also remained in the 1-3-1 zone for the rest of the game, which the Mean Green struggled against.
Ja'Michael Brown cut the lead to nine points, 55-46, with a layup at 13:22 but LA Tech responded with four straight points and kept the double-digit lead for the rest of the game.
J-Mychal Reese hit a 3-pointer to bring the Mean Green back within 10 points, 59-49, at 12:25. On the Bulldogs' next possession, Derail Green was called for a technical and fouled out of the game with 13 points. The Mean Green missed his offense for the final 10 minutes of the game.
LA Tech extended its lead to as many as 27 points before finishing with an 18-point advantage. Jacobi Boykins led all scorers with 22 points.
North Texas led by as many as seven points in the first half, 29-22, following a 12-4 run. Green opened the run with a 3-pointer, and Reese capped it with a three of his own.
The Bulldogs moved to the 1-3-1 zone and went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to one point, 30-29. Green tied the game, 32-32, with a 3-pointer with 39 seconds in the opening period.
North Texas made just two of its final 10 baskets of the first half and were plagued by six turnovers in the last four minutes.
The Mean Green will play their final home game on Saturday and host Senior Day against Southern Miss.

North Texas recorded 21 turnovers, its fourth most this season.
J-Mychal Reese scored in double-figures for the second straight game with 12 points. He has scored in double-figures in 10 of the 15 C-USA games.
J-Mychal Reese is now seven points away from hitting 1,000 points scored at North Texas and Texas A&M combined.
Derail Green has hit at least three 3-pointers in each of the last three games. He made four tonight against LA Tech. With the help of those 3-pointers, he has recorded double-figures in the last three games. He fouled out with 13 points tonight.
A.J. Lawson returned to double-figures after scoring just three points against UTSA. He led the Mean Green in scoring with 15 points, his 16th this season in double-figures.
The Mean Green must win all three remaining games and get help in order to make this year's conference tournament.
