Men's Basketball Wins 10th Home Game Of Season
Mean Green Defeats FAU, 70-62
DENTON -- After a three-point barrage in Thursday night's win, Deckie Johnson did not get many looks from behind the arc against Florida Atlantic, but he still managed to hit key shots in the final minutes of the game on Saturday to lead the Mean Green to its 10th home win of the season.
Johnson led the team with 19 points as the North Texas men's basketball team defeated the Owls, 70-62, on Saturday night in the Super Pit.
The Mean Green continued to gain momentum at home, winning its fourth straight game at the Super Pit. Following an exciting come-from-behind victory on Thursday against FIU, North Texas strung together another home win behind points in the paint and double-figuring scoring by Johnson, Jeremy Combs and J-Mychal Reese.
The Mean Green made just three 3-pointers but went inside to dominate FAU, outscoring the Owls in the paint, 28-14.
Six of Johson's 19 points were scored in the final four minutes of the game. He hit his second 3-pointer of the game at 3:52, followed by a jumper by Reese that gave North Texas its largest lead of the game, 63-52, with 3:04 left in the game.
But the Owls were not done. FAU went on a run, ending it with a 3-pointer that cut the game to three, 63-60, with 1:04 on the clock.
The Mean Green and Johnson continued to take the ball to the basket, and the home team took the victory with 7-of-8 makes from the charity stripe.
Johnson made 1-of-2 free throws with 38.3 seconds left to put North Texas ahead by four points, 64-60. After a missed FAU layup in its final possession, Johnson pulled down the rebound, was fouled at the other end of the floor and made both free throws to seal the win.
North Texas jumped out early at the start of the game and never looked back despite several comeback attempts by FAU. The Mean Green took a 6-0 advantage behind points in the paint by Combs and Eric Katenda. A 3-pointer by Johnson extended NT's early lead to 11-2. FAU cut the lead to four points several times, but North Texas always had a quick answer. The Mean Green entered half with a five-point lead.
"I think we can build on this," said Benford. "We have to go on the road and see if we get a couple more."
North Texas takes to road next week to face Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss.
