NORFOLK, Va. -- The North Texas men’s basketball team held Old Dominion to its second lowest halftime point total (21) but a tough shooting night led to a 67-47 road loss Thursday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

The Mean Green finished with a season low 47 points and only shot 31.4 percent from the field (16 of 51). North Texas was outrebounded 27-to-12 in the second half, including nine offensive rebounds.

“I give a lot of credit to Old Dominion for making adjustments at halftime,” head coach Tony Benford said. “I thought we did a great job on one of the best players in the conference holding Trey Freeman to just 13 points but their rebounders hurt us in the second half. We had a lot of good looks at the basket but they just weren’t falling tonight. We need to regroup and concentrate on bouncing back at Charlotte Saturday.”

NT drops to 9-15 overall and 4-7 in league play after a three of 19 performance from the three point line. Sophomore Jeremy Combs finished with his eighth double-double in 11 conference games scoring 10 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Combs had a season-high four steals and was one shy of his career high of five.

Junior J-Mychal Reese added 11 points and dished out three assists in 36 minutes. Classmate Deckie Johnson had 11 points and grabbed three rebounds in 30 minutes.

The Mean Green held the reigning C-USA Player of the Week Trey Freeman to just 13 points off five of 15 from the field. It snapped a streak of 10-straight games of 20-plus points or more for Freeman. The Monarchs finished just three of 13 from the three point line.

In the first half, North Texas continued to play well defensively for the third straight game holding Old Dominion to 21 points off six of 18 shooting for 33.3 percent.

Senior Eric Katenda opened the game with a layup to give the Mean Green a 2-0 lead. ODU would respond scoring the next five points to lead 5-2 early in the first session.

North Texas scored the next four points to re-take the lead at 6-5 off another layup by Katenda. The game was tied at 12-12 off a layup by freshman Allante Holston with 8:01 left in the half.

ODU opened up a three point lead at 18-15 off a 6-3 run capped by a jumper from Trey Freeman. The Mean Green would answer with a 7-0 run giving them a 22-18 advantage with 2:01 left in the half. Sophomore Jeremy Combs scored off an offensive rebound pushing the lead to 24-19.

The Monarchs would hit two free throws to close the half as North Texas led 24-21.

To open the second half, ODU took the lead with a 10-2 run to make the score at 31-26 with 15:42 remaining.

Johnson answered with a three-pointer to get North Texas within two points at 31-29.

ODU went on a 10-1 run to push their lead to 11 points capped by a layup from Aaron Bacote at the 9:24 mark.

The Mean Green went on a quick 5-0 run to cut ODU’s lead to 41-35 but North Texas wouldn’t get any closer.

The Monarchs closed the game outscoring North Texas 26-to-12 to make the final score 67-47 in favor of Old Dominion.
