Marshall Makes Plays In Closing Minutes To Down NT Hoops
Jordan Williams Scores Season-High Tying 23 Points In 80-73 Loss To Thundering Herd
Maurice Aniefiok, a graduate of Huntington Prep Academy, pulled down a team-high nine rebounds against Marshall in front of his American host family.
HUNTINGTON, W.V. - North Texas found itself needing a defensive stand and an answer with the clock winding down at Marshall on Saturday night, but the Thundering Herd found a way to make the plays and hold on to an 80-73 win over the Mean Green.
Down six points with 1:14 remaining, NT's Colin Voss soared for a steal that led to a DeAndre Harris layup on the other end. Marshall's Aleksa Nikolic hit a free throw on the other end, which set up a crucial possession for the Mean Green. Jordan Williams got open for a deep 3-pointer to the left of the key with 30 seconds on the clock, but it proved long and the Herd finished the game off with free throws.
Williams once again proved a handful for the Herd. The senior had 20 points last year in a Mean Green win at the Cam Henderson Center, and followed that up with a season-high tying 23 points on Saturday.
Voss wasn't far behind with 17 points, which is only one shy of his career best. DeAndre Harris had 11 points
NT's loss, combined with Rice's win over league-leading Western Kentucky, drops the Mean Green into 12th place in the C-USA standings with eight regular season games remaining.
The Mean Green turned the ball over just 10 times against the Herd, marking back-to-back games with 10 giveaways. NT's season low is nine turnovers set at Old Dominion.
Prior to Saturday these two programs had only met twice, and they split the two meetings. The Herd picked up a neutral site win over NT in 1990 before the Mean Green returned the favor last season with an 80-65 win in Huntington.
NT has been out-scored by 111 total points in the second half this year, but had reversed that trend over the last week. NT out-scored Rice and WKU by a combined 21 points in the second half before the Herd bested NT 45-35 on Saturday.
Colin Voss has now gone three straight games without a turnover. He has 10 assists over that span.
Tonight was the 50th career start for senior forward Colin Voss.
Jordan Williams now has 1,396 career points, which ranks 10th in NT history.
