WACO, Texas (11-15-08) Patrick Strong improved 21 spots from last season with a 20th place finish at the South Central Regional Saturday morning at Baylor. The sophomore from New Zealand ran the 10k race in a time of 31:39, four seconds better than last season, helping the men finish 11th overall.

Billy Giano also placed in the top 50 with a 48th place finish in the time of 32:49.3. Josue Nunez, Garrett Sage and Brandon Cooper finished in that order for the men’s team.

“We had some good runs and we were not supposed to be ahead of most of these teams,” North Texas cross country head coach Robert Vaughan said of the men. “But we finished ahead of them and did a little bit better than expected.”

On the women’s side the Mean Green took nine runners to the regional and was led by Freshman of the Year Sara Dietz. She finished with a team-best time of 23:05.9 in the 6k run to earn 61st place. Phanice Orora, Amy Alcala, Sallie Anderson, Jessica Torres and Tara Piles finished in that order for the women, who finished 16th as a team.
