DENTON, Texas -
North Texas will host the first championship of the newly-realigned Conference USA when it hosts the 2013 Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships this Saturday, Nov. 2, at Eagle Point Cross Country Course in Denton. The men's 8K race begins at 9 a.m. and the women's 5K starts at 10 a.m.
"We are so excited to host the first Conference USA championship of the season," said coach Stefanie Slekis." Our facilities department in conjunction with the track and field staff has worked hard to put together what we hope will be a premier event. "
The Mean Green women's team is No. 7 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's South Central rankings, while the men's team is No. 8 going into the championship weekend.
Among the athletes to watch is senior Jo Adams, who qualified first in the women's 5K race at the Ken Garland Invitational on Sept 28. She helped lead the Mean Green to a second-place team finish with a time of 17:48.47, and was awarded C-USA Cross Country Athlete for the Week on Oct.1.
Senior Matt Russ had two top-eight finishes this season, starting the season at the Bear Twilight Invitational. His seventh place (19:00.0) helped the Mean Green men's team win first, and his four-mile run of 20:33.53 at the Ken Garland Invitational placed him sixth overall.
"Jo and Matt are a vital part of the men's and women's team success this year," said Slekis. "They have knowledge and experience as seniors, who have competed at the national and international level. Both seniors have shared important lessons of competitive racing to help the team prepare for the championship portion of the season.
