North Texas will be looking for its second overall Sun Belt Conference Cross Country title and first since 2000 when the men and women's teams run in the Sun Belt Conference Championships in Bowling Green, Ky., on Saturday morning.
DENTON, Texas -- North Texas will be looking for its second overall Sun Belt Conference Cross Country title and first since 2000 when the men and women's teams run in the Sun Belt Conference Championships in Bowling Green, Ky., on Saturday morning.
The Mean Green will be looking to improve off of the 2010 Sun Belt Championships where they finished sixth on both the men's and women's sides in last year's SBC Championships.
"The Women's team is looking for a higher finish this weekend than they had last year," said head coach Sam Burroughs. "Sara (Dietz) & Ingrid (Mollenkopf) return as top-10 performers from last season and with those two seniors plus the recruiting class we brought in has improved our depth."
Seniors Ingrid Mollenkopf (6th) and Sara Dietz (10th) are competing for back-to-back All-Sun Belt Conference performances on the women's side and will be joined by five newcomers to complete the squad for this weekend.
"Sara, Ingrid, and Hanna are responsible to take care of business up front while Ellie (Arends), Blake (Geary), Leesa (Morales), Carly (Griffith), Lauren (Sullivan) are looking to lock up our final scoring positions," Burroughs added.
Matt Russ and Michael Sandoval lead the way on the men's side, trading the top-finisher honors all year. Joining Russ and Sandoval will be a flurry of newcomers as well.
"With only one guy returning from last season we have had to rely heavily on our newcomers and freshman," said Burroughs. "They have been able to step up so far this season, all the remains to be seen is whether or not that can step it up at the conference championship level."
The women's 5K event is scheduled to lead off the meet and will be followed by the men's 8K race. Both races will be run on Western Kentucky's home course at Kereiakes Park in Bowling Green. Start Time is scheduled for 10 a.m.
