DENTON, Tex. (10/25/07) The North Texas cross country teams head to Bowling Green this weekend with a conference championship up for grabs. The Mean Green men have been picked to finish fourth by the league coaches in the upcoming championship while the women were tabbed to finish in seventh.
Freshman Patrick Strong paces North Texas as the freshman from New Zealand has been the Sun Belt Conference Runner of the Week twice this season.
Along with Strong, the Mean Green boasts a deep lineup with senior Frank Ngeno, sophomore Brandon Cooper, and sophomore Daniel Holobowicz. Middle Tennessee is the favorite followed by UALR, Western Kentucky and then North Texas
The Mean Green is looking to capture its first cross country championship since last winning it in 2000.
On the women’s side the Mean Green take a young squad to compete led by Sallie Anderson, Jessica Torres, and Michelle Gallegos. That trio had the top three times for North Texas at the Memphis Twilight and has paced North Texas throughout the season. Western Kentucky, the 2006 champions, has been picked to repeat this season.
The championship will be held on Saturday, October 27 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The men’s 5-mile race will begin at 10 a.m. followed by the women’s 5K race that will start at 11 a.m. Both races will be held at Kereiakes Park.
