Men’s Cross Country Travels To Pre-Nationals Event

Oct. 14, 2016

DENTON – The North Texas men’s cross country team heads to Terre Haute, IN to take part in the 2016 Pre-National Invitational starting at 10:35 a.m. central time on the LaVern Gibson Championship course.

The men’s blue 8k race will be the second race of the day after the women’s 6k at 10 a.m. 41 teams come into the meet regionally ranked and the Mean Green are ninth in the South Central region.

“Based on comparing regional rankings we're coming in 30th out of 41 teams in the Blue Race,” cross country coach Stefanie Slekis said. “The goal is to definitely beat our rank and our best finish from 2014 when we finished 27th. A top-20 finish would be an ultimate goal if everyone raced to their best ability on Saturday.”

North Texas will be sending its top seven runners in junior Mike Lowe, senior James Coleman, junior Zach Kirkland, sophomore Kyle Maloney, redshirt freshman Alex Cleveland, freshman Tim Jones and classmate Florian Lussy.

“Individually we're looking to have our top runner match former student-athlete Troy Taylor's performance in 2014 where he finished 44th,” Slekis said. “If we put one in the top 50, three in the top 100, and five in the top 150 based on past year's results we have a chance at a top-20 team finish. This group has had excellent workouts and I'm excited to see how that work comes together in the most competitive field we'll see all season.”

The Mean Green will have two weeks to prepare for the Conference USA Championships hosted by Charlotte on Oct. 29. North Texas will get a chance to test out the NCAA National Championship course this weekend in hopes to qualify as a team or an individual on Nov. 19.

“Every team in the race is regionally ranked and there is at least one team from each of the nine regions so it is an exciting opportunity to see how we can compare to some of the best teams across the country,” Slekis added. “All of our training is geared toward a strong finish during the championship part of the season at conference and regionals so with two weeks to go this meet is a great opportunity for our men to test their fitness against the best before we really taper for the championship meets.”
