Arroyave And Gieringer Finish 1-2 As Mean Green Dominate North Texas Invitational

DENTON- Mario Arroyave and Matt Gieringer finished 1-2 to win the North Texas Cross Country Invitational at the UNT Research Park. The Mean Green as a team dominated the meet finishing with just 19 points to win. Arroyave won the 8k race with a time of 27:05 and Gieringer was just eight seconds off the pace at 27:13. North Texas had five of the top eight runners in the race as Justin Kauffman placed in fourth, Jason Bacchus finished in sixth, and Brad Thompson in eight.
Arroyave time was his season best and the seventh fastest time in the 8k in the Sun Belt Conference this season. Kauffman also ran a season best time and had the eight best time in the conference.
"Mario ran a great race today. He came in feeling a little nervous but he ran with incredible confidence," said North Texas Cross Country Coach Joan Hansen. "Matt actually ran a better race in the second half and Justin just came out of the woodwork today and had an incredible performance. This entire team just came through today".
On the women's side the Lady Eagles had stellar performances from Dagmar Salazar, Kristen Carson, and freshman Kelly Faszholz in the 6k race. Salazar ran a time of 25:02 to finish in eight place. Carson, a member of the North Texas swimming and diving team, finished in 10th place with a time of 25:48. Walk-on freshman Faszholz, who just joined the team, had a smashing debut with a time of 28:14.
"Kelly came out and ran an outstanding race considering she just joined the team," said Hansen. "Kristen picked up her pace in the second half of the race which is difficult to do, and Dagmar shgowed her strength again today".
As a team the Lady Eagles place third behind Angelo State and Sun Belt member Arkansas-Little Rock who won with a score of 22 points.
The Cross Country teams are next in action on October 12 at the Texas A&M Invitational.
