Juniors Pace Mean Green Cross Country At NT Invitational

DENTON (10/01/05) - A pair of juniors, Frank Ngeno and Jill Brennan, anchored the Mean Green cross country teams at the 28th annual North Texas Invitational on the Eagle Point Campus.

Ngeno's fourth place finish gave the men third place overall at the meet. The junior finished with his fastest time of the young season, 26:40 in the 8k run.

Brennan's 19:07 was her best time since last year's Sun Belt Conference Meet and was good for eighth place. The women's team finished fourth overall at the 5k event.

"We had a couple of athletes on the men's side who were sick, and it just didn't come together for us today," said North Texas cross country coach Toby Reep. "On the women's side we just aren't where we need to be right now, but we are focused on where we need to be for conference."

Billy Giano also notched a top ten finish for the men's side. The freshman finished ninth with a time of 27:28.

Josh Rogers and Justin Kauffman finished 11th and 16th respectively. Rogers finished in 27:48, while Kauffman, who battled an illness throughout the meet, finished in 28:25.

Blair Casey rounded out the field for the Mean Green, finishing 18th with a time of 29:20.

Freshman Gary Lackey, who led the Mean Green at the UT-Arlington Invitational earlier this season, was unable to finish the meet due to illness.

On the women's side, Cassie Storms and Alex Sherwin finished back-to-back at 18th and 19th place. Storms recorded a time of 19:52 and Sherwin finished in 19:57.

Michelle Gallegos earned a 24th place finish with a time of 20:17, and Ashley Sanders notched 34th placed in 22:03.

The Mean Green competes next at the Chile Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. on Oct. 29. It will be the final tune-up meet before the Sun Belt Conference Championships in Miami on Oct. 29.
