Mean Green Cross Country Teams Dominate The North Texas Invitational

DENTON (10/1/04)- The North Texas men and women’s cross country teams both won the 27th annual North Texas Invitational with dominating performances at the Eagle Point Campus.


On the men’s side North Texas swept the first three spots of the 8K race with sophomore Frank Ngeno winning with a time of 26.42. Matt Gieringer was second at 27:06 and Justin Kauffman ended in third place with a time of 27:18.


“The men ran really well today. This is a tough course with a lot of hills and the thing that we wanted to do today was stay together as a team and we did that,” said North Texas head coach Rick Watkins.


Sophomore’s Michael Hernandez and Logan Newell both had top 15 finishes as Hernandez had a time of 29:26, good for 11th while Newell checked in at 13th place with a time of 29:46.


On the women’s side North Texas captured first place in the 5K race with four of the top seven finishes in the meet. Sophomore Jill Brennan placed third with at time of 19:06.


Bonnie McKernan was fifth with a time of 19:44 followed up by teammates Dagmar Salazar at 19:58 and Cassie Storms with a time of 20:23. Jordan Skelton had a top 15 finish as she ran the course in a time of 21.53 to end 15th.


North Texas will return to action in the final tune-up of the season before the SBC Championship on October 16 at the Chili Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
