Strong Takes Second Place At Ken Garland Invitational

DENTON, Texas (9/27/08) North Texas’ Patrick Strong sure knows how to make a debut. After sitting out the opening cross country meet earlier this month, the sophomore finished in second place at the Ken Garland Invitational Saturday with a time of 25:34 in the 8k race, behind only UT-Arlington’s Idilio Campos.

 

Overall the men’s team finished fourth (89 points) while the women took fifth place (84 points) in the 5k race. The top runner for the women was Sarah Deitz, who came in 10th place with a time of of 19:13.

North Texas was notably missing their number two runner in Billy Giano while the women were without Jessica Torres and Amanda Kean, all three due to various injuries or illness.

 

The men’s team had two more top 20 finishes from Brandon Cooper (18th place, 27:12) and Josue Nunez (19th place, 27:23). Garrett Sage, Matthew Peters and Joey Manning finished out in that order for the Mean Green.

The women also had two more runners finish in the top 20. Phanice Orora and Sallie Anderson finished 17th and 18th respectively with Alex Sherwin, Tara Piles and Britni Doolie finishing behind them in that order.

 

North Texas still has the Sam Houston Invitational remaining on Oct. 18 in Huntsville before the Sun Belt Conference Championships on Nov. 1.
