North Texas Cross Country to Host Ken Garland Invitational
The Ken Garland/Northwest High School Invitational and Community 5K will take place this Saturday Sept. 27.
DENTON-The North Texas cross-country team will host the Ken Garland Invitational this Saturday at Eagle Point Cross Country Course.
The Mean Green will compete on the same course that the Conference USA Championships will be held on this November.
Last year, the North Texas men placed first and women placed second. Senior Charlotte Wilson took fifth in the women's race a year ago, while sophomore James Coleman led the men's team with a second place finish and was followed by his next 4 scoring teammates taking 3rd through 6th.
North Texas cross-country coach Stefanie Slekis said "on the men's side the plan is to run as a strong group again, focusing on having our time spread from our 1-8 men as close as our 1-5 men spread last year, which was just 14 seconds. I'm also very excited to see our freshmen compete at the 4-mile distance since this will be the longest cross country race of their careers so far and a nice stepping stone before the 8k next weekend at the University of Arkansas' Chile Pepper Festival." The men's team will compete against conference opponents UTSA and LA Tech, as well as TCU.
The Mean Green Women will face tough competition from nationally-ranked SMU (24th), and regionally ranked opponent TCU (14th), and conference opponents who are also regionally ranked UTSA (11th), Rice (7th), and Southern Miss.
"This weekend is a great opportunity for all of our women to really test where the past month of training has progressed their fitness. We have had some outstanding workouts so I am excited to see how fast all of our women can race and how we can compete against Rice and UTSA" said Slekis.
The collegiate men will race at 10:50 a.m. and the women will race at 11:20 a.m. There will also be a Community 5K, which will take place at noon.
