North Texas Set To Host Ken Garland Invitational

DENTON, Texas (9/16/09) - The North Texas cross country teams return to action this weekend when they host the Ken Garland Invitational Saturday at the Eagle Point Cross-Country Course.

The first race will begin at 8:15 a.m. beginning with the women (5k), followed by the men's race (8k) at approximately 8:45 a.m.

The meet will be comprised of some solid competition, such as Baylor, SMU and TCU. Other colleges include UT-Arlington, Angelo St., Wiley College, East Central, Northwood and UT-Dallas.

"The competition will be really strong this weekend, especially on the women's side," North Texas cross country head coach Robert Vaughan said. "Baylor (1) and SMU (4) are two of the top teams in the region. So anytime you can bring in teams like that it will be a good test."

North Texas has gone almost two weeks without action, having last competed at the TCU Invitational on Sept. 3. The men's team, who last week was led by Patrick Strong's first-place performance, was just recently ranked 12th overall in the South Central Region by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association officials.

The women were led last week by sophomore Sara Dietz, who finished 7th at the TCU Invitational with a time of 11:51 in the two mile race. Vaughan believes as the season progresses the results will come for the rest of the team and the talent pool from this weekend's race can only help.

"We're still in that exhibition time of the season," Vaughan said. "But each week you want to see the teams get stronger you expect to get some improvement. Having better competition will only help us when we get into conference.
