Schmidt, Gieringer Pace Runners at UNT Invitational

DENTON (9/13/03) -- North Texas newcomer Jessica Schmidt raced to a fifth place finish in the women's division while senior Matt Gieringer crossed in 15th place in the men's race to highlight the Mean Green cross country team's performance at Saturday's UNT Invitational at Research Park.

Schmidt, a junior, covered the women's 5-K course in a time of 18:10 to finish in fifth place. She was joined in the top 20 by Mean Green teammate Dagmar Salazar, who placed 16th with a time of 19:07.

On the men's side, Gieringer, a senior,  finished 15th in the 8-K event with a time of 26:34.  Also for NT, Josh Rogers narrowly missed the top 20 by finishing 26th in a time of 27:28.

In the five-team field, Oklahoma captured the team title on the men's side with 27 points while Baylor took the women's title with 34 points.

In a two-mile race, North Texas' Courtney Campbell placed first with a time of 12:56.
