Cross Country Heads To Gerald Richey Invitational
Underclassmen Chance To Shine
DENTON - The North Texas men's and women's cross country teams head down the road to take part in the Gerald Richey Invitational hosted by UT Arlington Saturday, Sept. 10 starting at 8 a.m.
The men's team will be sending five runners in sophomores Zach Kirkland, Michael Johnson, Ethan Davis, freshmen Tim Jones, and Hayden Murphy. The women's team also has five runners competing in Jennifer White, Baylee Nelson, Tori Valka, Cassidy Adams and Kacie Jo Corbin.
"This week is a great week for our underclassmen to have the opportunity to score for the team," cross country coach Stefanie Slekis said. "We'll just run five men and five women, the minimum to earn a team score, so everyone on the line will know that their individual performance will have a direct impact on the team's score. All 10 competitors are freshmen or sophomores who will be vying for the eighth and ninth positions on our Conference roster at the end of the season. So this is an excellent opportunity for them to race more aggressively and compete at the front for our team."
Both teams will run a 5k race with the women's team starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning. The Mean Green will be competing against SMU, Georgia State, Dallas Baptist, Midwestern State and UT Arlington.
Last week, both teams open the season going 2-0 in dual meets as freshman Florian Lussy took home first place on the men's side with a time of 12:13.7. Sophomore Susannah Lynch finished 10th to lead the women's team.
"We'll be racing 5k which is back to what all of our underclassmen are very familiar with and a distance they were very successful at in high school," added Slekis. "So this race is a great confidence booster for the men especially to go out and race a distance they know well. I'm excited to see this group of underclassmen come together and race hard for their own team finish representing North Texas."
