Cross Country Opens 2017 Campaign At Baylor Twilight Friday
Five Teams Set To Compete With North Texas
DENTON – For the fifth-straight season, the North Texas men’s and women’s cross country teams will start their season at the Bear Twilight Invitational Friday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m.
The women’s 4k race will begin at 7 p.m. followed by the men’s 6k race. The Mean Green will face off against TCU, Abilene Christian University, Texas State, Incarnate Word, and Baylor.
“This is an early season meet so it will be a good measuring stick of our fitness and will help assess what we need to do moving forward,” cross country coach Kevin Williams said. “It is a great opportunity to see some teams within our region that we will be competing against later this year.”
The men’s team will be sending seven runners to the opening meet, including four returners in senior Rick Nally, junior Alex Cleveland, sophomores Tim Jones, and Hayden Murphy. The Mean Green will have three newcomers in junior Frank Bearden, as well as freshmen Jack Beaumont and Matthew Morgan.
The women’s squad will have 12 runners at the first meet led by all-conference and all-region performer Susannah Lynch. Other returners are junior Cassidy Adams, sophomore Darrian Johnson, juniors Kellee McCann, Baylee Nelson, sophomore Jennifer White, senior Victoria Junious, and sophomore Tori Valka. North Texas will have four newcomers in junior Rea Iseli, as well as freshmen Monica Carroll, Eva Mora, and Olivia Zint.
“Our goals for the season are to be consistent with our effort and results,” Williams said. “We have some nice pieces, but we need everyone at their best at the same time. Both the men and the women have a great opportunity to improve upon their placings at the conference and regional meets.”
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released the Preseason Regional Rankings and the Mean Green were picked eighth in the men's poll and 13th in the women's poll.
