Slekis Coaches and Runs For The Mean Green

Aug. 29, 2014

DENTON- Stefanie Slekis of Mean Green cross-country is running both for the North Texas team, and for herself. Slekis is both a coach and a competitive runner, an interesting combination for a college-level cross-country coach.

Heading into her second season coaching both the men and women’s teams, Slekis has made a mark not only as a runner, but also as a coach. The Mean Green is coming off its best season in the last ten years, with the men placing second overall in last year’s Conference USA Championships and the girls placing third overall in the same Championships. In addition to their success from last season, North Texas cross-country men are currently ranked sixth and the women ninth in the regional pre-season poll.

After running in college at Syracuse University, Slekis has continued to run competitively and has her sights set on the marathon distance. Slekis qualified for the Boston marathon this past June, but her personal goal is to run a qualifying time for the Olympic Trials.

Slekis has aspirations for the team to make it to the NCAA Cross-Country Championships. Having graduated only one male runner and gaining a strong freshman class, both teams are ready to move up in the rankings.

Both Mean Green teams open the 2014 season on Friday, Aug. 29 when they compete in the Baylor Twilight Invitational.
