North Texas Will Host 2014 Cross-Country Championship
The Mean Green Is Hosting For Second Straight Year
DENTON, Texas - North Texas will host the Conference USA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 1, on campus at Eagle Point Cross-Country Course.
This will be the second year in a row that North Texas has hosted the event. The women's 5k race will take place first, followed by the men's 8k. Awards will be presented at the end of the men's championship, however no start times have been officially set.
"We are thrilled," cross country coach Stefanie Slekis said. "We have a great course for both the competitors and fans thanks to our excellent facilities department, who prides themselves on putting on top-notch events. Hosting the championship again will give our athletes the opportunity to be very familiar with the course, which will be a great advantage for our newcomers."
When North Texas hosted the event last year, the men's team finished second and the women's team took third. Six men on the team finished within the top 21, with sophomore Troy Taylor leading the way taking ninth place overall.
On the women's side, the Mean Green returns Charlotte Wilson, who finished in sixth place last year at the conference championship. Junior Magdalena Escobar also returns for the Mean Green. She missed all-conference honors by three places last year.
The men and women's team will each add five newcomers to their teams. Freshman Zach Kirkland raced on the Eagle Point Cross-Country Course for his high-school cross-country meet so he will already have some experience going into the conference championship.
The North Texas cross country team's first meet of the season will be the Baylor Twilight International in Waco on Aug. 29.
