North Texas Cross Country Wins Conference USA Championship

DENTON - The North Texas men's cross-country team won the Conference USA Cross Country Championship on its home course on Saturday morning.

"I've dreamed of this moment since I got offered this job," said North Texas head cross-country coach Stefanie Slekis, who was named the coach of the year on the men's side. "I'm really excited, this is a big moment for us."

The top five runners for the men's team finished in the top 15, leading them to the first-place finish. The North Texas women's team finished third this year. This is the second Conference USA Championship in back-to-back days, and the first conference championship for Mean Green cross-country program since 1994.

"I think it was awesome," said North Texas head track and field coach Carl Sheffield. "They've been shooting for this title since outdoor last year."

Junior Troy Taylor placed third, leading the men's team in the 4-mile race with a time of 24:15.1. Senior Alejandro Valencia, who won Outstanding Senior, finished ninth with a time of 24:32.37.


 

 

Troy Taylor earned first-team all-conference honors. Alejandro Valencia, James Coleman and Bryce McAndrew earned second team, and Silvester Harrison and Mike Lowe earned third-team recognition.

On the women's side, senior Charlotte Wilson came in fourth place with a time of 16:55.06. Wilson earned Outstanding Senior and first-team all-conference. Sophomore Shauna Pali came in 15th with a time of 17:32.09 and junior Magdalena Escobar finished 20th with a time of 17:47.22. Pali, Escobar, and junior Susie Kemper all earned Conference Third Team.

"I'm really happy with the race," said senior Charlotte Wilson. "Coming in fourth, I had a much better time than I did last year on the same course, I'm glad I improved my place and time."

"I'm really excited about what our women's team can do in the future," Slekis said.

"Everyone on the men's team stepped up and did what they are capable of... six guys all-conference is pretty good," Slekis said.

"Third place is great, I'm content with myself," said junior captain Troy Taylor. Overall, it felt pretty great."

"I'm extremely happy," said senior captain Alejandro Valencia. "As long as we got the `W' that's all that matters.

North Texas cross-country will run the NCAA South Central Regional Championships Nov. 14 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

·      - Last year, the Mean Green men finished in second, and the women placed third.

-At last year's Conference USA Championships, Troy Taylor placed ninth with a time of 25:30.35
