Mean Green Cross Country Takes Third At C-USA Championships
Men's Team Finishes In Third, Women Places Seventh
BOWLING GREEN, KY – The North Texas cross country teams competed at the Conference USA Championships as the men’s team came in third and the women’s team seventh Saturday at the Kereiakes Park hosted by Western Kentucky.
“We knew coming into the race it would be tough but we rallied to have four guys all-conference,” said cross country coach Stefanie Slekis. “We had a bunch of guys step up from last year as Mike (Lowe) improved 12 spots and Cody (Campbell) was our fifth man but it just wasn’t enough. We hope to regroup and are excited to race at Regionals in two weeks.”
The men’s team ran a tough race with two of its top runners not 100 percent healthy. Sophomore Mike Lowe led the team with a ninth place finish coming in at 24:57.9. Seniors Bryce McAndrew came in 12th at 25:15.0 and Silvester Harrison III was 17th with a time of 25:26.6. Junior Grady Frazier finished in 21st at 25:37.6. Junior Cody Campbell just missed out on all-conference (top-21) coming in 28th with a time of 25:53.8.
Senior Alex Hita came in 29th and just missed being a counting score with a time of 25:57.9. Junior James Coleman (26:05.9) was 32nd and senior Troy Taylor was 55th at 26:50.3. The Mean Green will get to race again in two weeks at the NCAA South Central Regionals hosted by Texas A&M Nov. 13.
The women’s squad came up short finishing in seventh place at the conference championship. Senior Magdalena Escobar led the team with a 21st place finish with a time of 18:33.6. Escobar earned her second all-conference honor finishing in the top 21. Sophomore Christina Moralez finished 25th at 18:39.2 and junior Shauna Pali was 44th with a time of 19:09.3. Freshman Catalina Uriarte came in 46th finishing at 19:15.1. Classmate Cassidy Adams was the final scorer touching in 54th at 19:31.2.
“A disappointing day for the women’s team but we battled,” said Slekis. “Maggie ran a solid meet for us finishing all-conference. We had two freshman girls come in and run as our fourth and fifth finishers. We are hoping to do more at the Regional race in College Station.”
