Men's XC Captures Second At SBC Championships
North Texas men's cross country finished in second place at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, it's the highest finish since 2007.
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (10/23/12) - North Texas men's cross country finished in second place at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, it's the highest finish since 2007.
Freshman Troy Taylor led the way for the Mean Green, crossing the line sixth in 25:30.8, earning Freshman of the Year honors. Junior Matt Russ was named to the All-SBC third team after a 14th-place finish in 25:57.3.
"Big tun around from last year's finish," head coach Sam Burroughs said. "Having a big freshmen class helps make it happen. It's always good to bring home trophies."
Freshman Alex Hita (26:01.1) finished two spots behind Russ at 16th, followed by Silvester Harrison (26:07.7) at 21st with Bryce McAndrew (26:33.6) at 28th wrapping up the top five.
All five members of the Mean Green that scored finished above 28th as the men recorded 86 points.
Freshman Kevin Webb (26:58.9) finished at 40th, Austin Yeager (27:32.7) at 48th, Joel Flores (27:37.2) at 49th.
The Mean Green women fell to sixth place this season with a total score of 157.
Senior Jo Adams was the first to finish for the women's team, crossing the line at second place, just seven seconds behind the first-place runner. Adams earned All-SBC first team honors.
Freshman Kaitlyn Newton (19:17.2) crossed the line 28th, followed by Yvette Hernandez (19:41.5) at 39th, Kylee Kittrell (19:52.4) at 44th, Laura Cortez (19:58.2) at 46th.
Sophomore Leesa Morales ran her first race of the season, finishing 56th in 20:11.8 and Melissa Brito (20:27.5) finished 60th.
"Jo's finish was the best women's individual finish at the SBC Championships in a while," Coach Burroughs said. "Sixth place was good considering our injuries this season."
The Mean Green cross country teams travel back to Fayetteville, Ark. for the NCAA South Central Regional on Saturday, Nov. 9.
