HUNTSVILLE, Texas (10/17/09) - In their final tune up before the Sun Belt Conference Championship, the Mean Green women's cross country closed the regular season in style by taking first place at the Sam Houston Invitational.
The victory was the women's second straight first-place finish after winning the North Texas Invitational two weeks ago. Junior Ingrid Mollenkopf was the top finisher (3rd, 18:54.48) for North Texas for the second straight race. Sophomore Sara Dietz also placed in the top-10 by finishing fifth with a time of 19:02.18.
"Most the women ran quite well today," North Texas head coach Robert Vaughan said. "We've had a couple runners that have been ill but they overcame that. Sara ran much better as did Ingrid and Sallie. The most important thing in cross country is how well your fourth and fifth runners are and those runners stepped up today."
The women's team rounded out the race in the following order: Sallie Anderson (11th,19:31.19), Amanda Kean (13th,19:38.45), Jessica Torres (23rd, 20:01.59), Amy Alcala (27th, 20:20.74), Sarah Workman (41st, 20:47.20), Haley Cowan (45th, 20:52.89), Kalie Hagood (55th, 21:29.10), Tara Piles (56th, 21:29.97).
The Mean Green men's team had a good showing as well by placing third, led by senior Patrick Strong. The New Zealand native finished third with a time of 19:56.27 in the 6300m run.
