Men's Cross Country Team Finishes Pre-National Meet
Freshman Florian Lussy Finishes 131st
TERRE HAUTE, IN - The North Texas men's cross country team competed against some of the elite programs in the country placing 39th at the Pre-National Invitational Saturday Oct. 15 hosted by Indiana State.
The Mean Green took part in the Pre-National event for the third-straight season after finishing 38th last season.
"There was a bunch of positives in this meet for our men's team," cross country coach Stefanie Slekis said. "It was a good showing for Florian after having to miss the last two meets. Also Alex Cleveland ran really well in his first time at Pre-Nationals and James Coleman finished 100 spots better than his previous best finish here."
Freshman Florian Lussy led North Texas with a strong showing coming in 131st with a time of 25:28.3. Senior James Coleman had his best finish at a Pre-National meet touching in 154th at 25:40.4. Redshirt freshman Alex Cleveland was 198th with a time of 25:56.7 and junior Mike Lowe was 226th at 26:19.5. Freshman Tim Jones completed the scoring finishing 238th with a time of 26:37.2.
Junior Zack Kirkland came in 257th and sophomore Kyle Maloney was 261st to conclude the prestigious meet that had 268 runners compete.
Oregon, ranked No. 4 in the country, came away with the team victory and the Duck's Edward Cheserek won the individual title. Oregon placed three runners in the top-20 to defeat second-place Arkansas by 25 points.
"We will have two weeks to get in shape for the conference championships in Charlotte," Slekis said. "The plan is to race really well at conference focusing on running with the top teams. I am really pleased with our workouts so we will continue to keep getting better for the last half of the season."
