FT. WORTH, Texas (9/5/09) - Junior Patrick Strong began the 2009 season with a bang, placing first at the TCU Cross Country Season Opener Saturday morning in Fort Worth. Strong, a New Zealand native, ran the four-mile race in a time of 20:37.
Over the past three seasons in the races Strong has competed in he is a perfect 9-for-9 as the top finisher for the Mean Green.
Senior Garrett Stage also had a strong showing in his first competition of the season with a fourth-place finish (21:23).Matt Peters (8th), Josue Nunez (12th) and Michael Ortiz (19th) rounded out the finishes for the men.
As a team the men finished second behind TCU (37 points) with 44 points while the women placed fourth (73 points). Reigning Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year Sara Dietz was the top finisher for the Mean Green women, coming in seventh place in the two-mile race with a time of 11:51.
Ingrid Mollenkompf (11th), Sallie Anderson (14th), Amy Alcala (18th), Sarah Workman (22nd), Jessice Torres (23rd), Tara Piles (29th) and Kalie Hagood (31st) finished in that order respectively for the women's team.
Both North Texas cross country teams will be back in action when they host the Ken Garland Invitational Saturday, Sept. 19.
