WACO - The North Texas cross country teams had a strong start to the season as the men's team came in first and the women placed third at the Bear Twilight Invitational Tuesday night.

"I am really proud of the strong showing by both teams in our first meet," head coach Stefanie Slekis said. "We had three women in the top-15 and the men had a great game plan that played out exactly how we wanted to. There is still lot of work to be done on both sides but it is a great starting point to setup the season."

The women's team came away with a third place finish to start the night after running a 4k race. Senior Magdalena Escobar was the top finisher coming in seventh place with a time of 14:20. Escobar had her best finish ever at the event and ran her lowest time beating last year's by almost 40 seconds (15:01). Junior Shauna Pali was 10th after coming in at 14:24.5 and finished 13 spots higher than last year's 23rd place at the Baylor invitational. Sophomore Christina Moralez finished 18th (14:41.5), freshman Cassidy Adams was 26th (15:10.2) and junior Kylee Kittrell rounded out the scoring in 27th (15:11.0).

The men's team dominated from start to finish earning a perfect score of 15 points in route to a first place finish. Junior James Coleman won the race with a time of 18:21.6 and senior Troy Taylor came in second at 18:25.7. Classmates Bryce McAndrew finished third (18:33.1), Silvester Harrison III was fourth (18:36.7) and junior Grady Frazier completed the perfect score with a fifth place showing (18:37.3).

"It was a good showing for the men's side," Slekis said. "It was a really controlled effort and the team made a strong push running the last portion of the race hard. It is really exciting to see James (Coleman) show what he is capable of and I am proud of his effort showing off his hard work this summer."

Junior Cody Campbell and senior Alexander Hita each had top 10 showings in the race. Campbell finished ninth with a time of 18:54.9 and Hita was 10th at 18:58.4.
