DENTON (11/22/04) - North Texas Director of Track and Field Rick Watkins has announced the early signing of five athletes to national letters of intent. The Mean Green has added Gary Lackey, Jerry Jones, and Billy Giano on the men’s side along with Brandi Standfield and Lauren Wiggins on the women’s side
“We are very excited about this early signing class. We believe all of these kids will be able to make an immediate impact in the Sun Belt Conference and in the Midwest Region, and help us build on a strong Track and Field tradition at North Texas” said Watkins.
The North Texas women’s team finished as the runners-up at the Conference Cross-Country, Indoor and Outdoor Championships last spring after winning the Outdoor title in 2003. The Men were third at the Outdoor Championship in 2003 and slipped to fourth in the 2004 Outdoor Championship.
The two programs have combined for 13 Individual Conference Champions, have had 76 student-athletes named to the All-Conference team, and have sent 33 student-athletes to the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships the previous 2 years.
Gary Lackey, Brownfield High School Lackey finished 3rd at the 2004 UIL Class 3A State Cross-Country Championships last week in Round Rock. Was the Class 3A runner-up in 2003 as a junior. Has a best time of 4:19.35 in the 1600 meters and 9:15.88 in the 3200 on the track.
Jerry Jones, Southwest Christian College (Denison, TX HS) Jones was a finalist in the 400 meters at the National Junior College Championships last spring, finishing 8th with a best time of 47.23. As a High School Senior, Jones was the Region II, Class 4A Champion in the 400 meters, and finished 2nd at the 2002 State Championships.
Billy Giano, Midland Lee High School Billy was an 8th place finisher in the UIL Region I Cross-Country Championships. Qualified for the state championships last weekend in Round Rock, TX where he finishing 19th in Class 5A. Was the runner-up in both the 3200 meters and 1600 meters in the 2004 District 3-5A Championships, finishing 5th in both races at the Region I Championships as a junior.
Brandi Standfield, Pflugerville Conally High School Was the 2004 UIL Class 4A State Champion in the Long Jump and finished 3rd in the Triple Jump. Was a double winner at the Class 4A Region III Championship, winning the Long Jump (19’0 ”) and the Triple Jump (39’11 ”) during her junior year.
Lauren Wiggins, Hebron High School Wiggins was the District 6-4A Champion in the 100 meter Hurdles, and finished 2nd in the 100 Meter Dash. Finished 2nd in the Region I 4A Championships, qualifying for the State finals where she finished 5th during her Junior Year.
