North Texas Track & Field Announces 2015-16 Schedule
Mean Green Will Look To Compete On The National Stage
DENTON – The North Texas track and field team released its 2015-16 schedule, including dates at Notre Dame, Oklahoma, TCU, Baylor and the Texas Relays this upcoming spring.
“This year’s schedule will look similar to the last couple of years,” head coach Carl Sheffield said. “Indoors is always a challenge and there is just not a lot of choices and opportunities to compete near us. I still believe that the indoor schedule will provide great competition to prepare us for the Conference USA Indoor Championships in February.”
The indoor season starts with the Texas A&M indoor meet in College Station January 15. North Texas will compete at the Kansas State indoor invitational Jan. 22-23 and end the month of January at the Howie Ryan Invitational in Houston.
The Mean Green will also take part in the Herm Wilson Invitational hosted by Wichita State and the prestigious Alex Wilson Invite. run by Notre Dame in South Bend, IN. The Conference USA indoor championships will be held in Birmingham, AL February 24-25.
“The meet at Notre Dame will be a good chance for us to qualify for Indoor nationals,” said Sheffield. “We’ll take a select group to challenge the fields and see where we are before the Conference Championships. Our indoor and outdoor conference meets provide a tremendous level of competition for our teams. Several national qualifying marks are obtained during the pressures of team competition, which says a lot about the athletes that compete in Conference USA.”
The outdoor season kicks off just five days after the NCAA indoor championships in Birmingham. North Texas starts close to home at the TCU Invitational (March 17-18) and the UTA Invite. (March 26) in back-to-back weeks.
Four days later, the Mean Green compete in the popular Texas Relays held in Austin. The event started in 1925 and is the second largest track meet in the United States with over 5,000 athletes attending, behind only the Penn Relays.
The track team has five meets in April to help prepare for the C-USA championships May 12-15 hosted by Middle Tennessee State in Murfreesboro, TN.
“The State of Texas has always given us a number of competitions to prepare us for the outdoor season,” added Sheffield. “With national qualifiers from TCU and UTA to start off the year, we’ll immediately get a chance to see what it will take for competing on the national scene. Going to Wichita State will be the first for us over the past four seasons. They will have a terrific test for our entire team. They are a pretty good head-to-head team challenger. So it will be good to see how we fare in preparing for the Outdoor Conference Championships."
The Mean Green will have a full squad of 79 student-athletes, including 41 on the men’s team and 38 on the women’s. 24 members of the team are seniors and will be counted on for leadership. The goal will be to have multiple qualifiers for the NCAA West Preliminary round May 26-28 in Lawrence, KS.
“We have improved our depth over the past recruiting classes,” said Sheffield. “It’s time for our underclassmen to step up and help our seniors in the point scoring events. We have chosen competitions that give us the best opportunities to hone our skills in qualifying for the Conference USA finals. We are in a very competitive league in almost every event nationally. If we are not at our best on those days, we’ll miss qualifying by centimeters and hundredths of seconds. Our goal is to use each competition to challenge the quality and depth of our team each week.”
