Eckels Finishes Sixth At Track & Field Junior Nationals
Freshman Long Jumper Ends Season
SACRAMENTO, CA -- North Texas freshman long jumper Breanna Eckels finished sixth in at the USA track & field junior championships Friday.
Eckels qualified for the championships after posting 6.15 meters in the long jump at the C-USA Outdoor Championships. Eckels had six attempts with her best coming on the third jump of 5.90 meters to earn a sixth-place finish.
"I am very proud of Breanna Eckels who came in sixth in the long jump at the USA junior track & field championships in Sacramento," head coach Carl Sheffield said. "This year's freshman class along with the incoming newcomers will continue the youth movement of the women's team."
The five long jumpers who posted higher marks, only two others were on collegiate teams and three from high school. Eckels had a breakout season for the Mean Green earning freshman of the meet at the C-USA Indoor Championships and earned second-place in the long jump at the C-USA Outdoor Championships.
"It wasn't my best meet but considering where I placed I am not too disappointed," Eckels said. "I have had a long season starting training in September and now finishing in June. I am excited about the future with how our underclassmen performed this season and a talented class coming in for next year."
