Dietz, Talley To Compete At 2009 Junior USA Championships

DENTON, Texas (6/23/09) Although the 2009 track season came to an conclusion for a few members of the Mean Green track and field team two weeks ago at the NCAA Championships in Arkansas, two athletes are still paving their way for a shot at representing the USA in the World Championships in July.

Freshmen distance runner Sara Dietz and sprinter Keyth Talley will represent North Texas proudly this weekend as they take part in the 2009 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships (June 25-28) held in Eugene, Oregon at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. The top two finishers in each respective event from this weekend will qualify to compete at the World Championships.

This weekend’s event serves as the selection meet for the 2009 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships, which runs July 31-August 2 at Hasley Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Talley, who was the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year and was a member of the men’s 4X100 relay that advanced to the NCAA Championships, will be racing in both the 100m and 200m dash. He enters this weekend’s field with the fifth fastest seed in the 100m (10.35) and the third best in the 200m (20.86). Also, his time of 20.74 in the 200m dash at the Mean Green Twilights this past March ranks as the 10th fastest time in the world in the junior rankings.

If Talley were to finish third or fourth this weekend he would have a good shot at being chosen as a relay runner.

Joining Talley will be Dietz, who also picked up conference honors this past fall when she was selected the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year in cross country. She will be participating in the 800m run and has the 14th best time in the competition. Dietz earned all-conference honors with her third place finish of 2:12.40 at the Sun Belt Championships.

Talley will kick things off on Friday beginning with the men’s 100m dash at 2:20 p.m. while Dietz will run in the 800m at 2:20 on Saturday. The 200m dash awaits Talley on Saturday at 11:40 a.m.
