Smith And Edwards Run Ends At NCAA Championship

DES MOINES, Iowa (6/11/08) One of the most memorable seasons for North Texas track and field stars Ciara Smith and Toby Edwards came to an end at the 2008 NCAA Championship. Both competed against some of the nation’s best athletes but could not advance from the preliminaries of the 400 meter dash and the high jump.

"I know that they are disappointed but it was a great experience," said coach Rick Watkins. "Toby was right there and just needed to clear his height in one less attempt but I'm proud of the way they both came in here and competed".

Smith, the school record holder in the 400-meter dash, finished fifth in her preliminary heat with a time of 55.10 but did not advance to the semifinals. The top 16 times advanced to Friday night’s semifinals but Smith’s time was 25th fastest.

Edwards was in the mix in the high jump as he cleared a height of 6-10.75 and was in a logjam of 10 athletes tied for the height. However Edwards did not advance as six of those 10 athletes cleared the height in fewer attempts than Edwards to advance to the finals.

Officially Edwards ended the high jump in 18th place but his height tied for the 10th best of the night.

Smith and Edwards advancing to the NCAA Championship marked the first time since 1983 that North Texas has had multiple athletes in different events competing for a national title.
