DENTON (6/7/07) The awards and accolades continue for North Texas javelin thrower Heath Smith. He was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Smith, a senior who holds a 4.0 GPA, has been selected to the Academic All-District Team for the second straight year.
Smith will now be added to the Academic All-America ballot, where he was a second-team Academic All-America pick in 2006.
Smith advanced to the NCAA national meet in the javelin, becoming the first North Texas javelin thrower to qualify for the national meet since 1970
He finished second at the NCAA Midwest regional meet with a career-best throw of 65.62 meters to qualify for the national meet. Smith won the 2007 and 2006 Sun Belt outdoor javelin championship.
To be nominated for the Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore starter or significant reserve on her team with a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. District VI represents student-athletes in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
