SACRAMENTO, Calif. (6/6/07) - Senior javelin thrower Heath Smith bowed out of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships on Wednesday after finishing 11th in his flight.
Smith, who was making his first appearance at the national meet, heaved a throw of 60.29 meters on his first throw before fouling on his following two. Overall Smith finished 22nd in the field of 26 throwers.
It was a career-best throw of 65.62 meters at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet that automatically qualified Smith for the trip to Sacramento. It would have taken at least that to get him into the final field of 12. Preston Chatham of LSU took that final spot with a throw of 65.29 meters.
Smith closes out his Mean Green career as the back-to-back Sun Belt Conference javelin champion. He also holds the top five marks at the school in the "new" javelin category, including the school record he set at the regional meet this season.
